Treatment for gambling addiction

Gambling addiction leaves no marks on the body, and that is why the family is usually the last to notice it — often only once the loans have appeared. The illness is the same one as a chemical addiction; the difference is that here the substance is the game.

For most people, cards, slot machines, casinos, racing, sports bets, lotteries, online role-playing games and poker stay a harmless way to spend an evening. For some, though, gambling turns into an addiction. It usually takes hold in people whose psychological footing is less steady, and who play to get away from stress.

Gambling addiction grows on a person gradually: the urge to play comes more often, the stakes get bigger, and in the end the game is the only way of passing time that feels comfortable. The habit is very hard to break, because its roots are psychological — the game has taken the place of every other way of getting through a bad mood.

Stopping gets harder each time. The person drops other things that matter and gives up working hours, free time and relationships, all of it for the sake of the game. Pleading and persuasion from the family stop working, and that is the point where specialist help is needed.

How gambling addiction differs from chemical dependency

Formally, by the absence of a substance. In practice, by almost nothing: the same denial, the same loss of control, the same progression, the same breakdown of relationships. The only real difference is that a person with a gambling addiction goes far longer without being seen as ill — and without seeing themselves that way.

The second difference is money. A chemical addiction takes health first; a gambling addiction takes money first. The family finds out about the illness at the moment debts appear, loans are taken out in someone else's name and belongings start going missing. Until then everything looked normal.

The third is that there is no physical withdrawal, so no detox is needed. The whole of the work is psychotherapy: changing how the person thinks, giving them back the ability to feel, and teaching them to get through stress without placing a bet.

The methods we use

We put together an individual course for each person, one that is meant not only to lift the addiction but to restore mental health. These are the methods we use in the treatment of gambling addiction:

Gambling debts and loans: what the family can do

Why clearing gambling debts does not help, where the limit of family support lies, and what to do first once credit and loans have already appeared.

Frequently asked questions

Is this really an illness, or just a lack of willpower?

An illness. The mechanism is the same as in chemical addiction: loss of control, denial, progression. Willpower has nothing to do with it — people who are highly disciplined at work and in sport lose exactly the same way.

Can we simply take the bank cards away and limit access to money?

It is worth doing, but on its own it treats nothing. The person will find money elsewhere: borrowing from friends, payday loans, items from the house, relatives' savings. Controlling the finances buys time to seek help; it does not replace it.

The person promises to win it back and then stop for good. Should we believe it?

The idea of winning it back and then stopping is the illness speaking in the person's own voice. No win ever clears the debts, because money that is won goes straight back into the game. It is the most common sentence we hear from families.

Is detox needed for gambling addiction?

No. There is no substance and no physical withdrawal. The opening stage of the programme is therefore shorter, but the psychotherapy itself is not cut down.

What should we do about the debts?

Debts are a separate question and not one we deal with: we are not a financial company. What the programme does is teach the person to look at the real figure and stop hiding it from the family — without that, the debt keeps growing.

I, Andrey, am now a former drug addict. My entire family struggled with this disease for a long time, but it kept coming back, and I started using again. I completed a rehabilitation course at the ISTOK Center. The center offered classes on specialized rehabilitation methods for addicts. The management and staff were positive and responsive, and everything contributed to my treatment and recovery. The center has a home-like atmosphere. Everything is thought out and calculated so that the addict can truly reflect on their problem and make the right choice, quitting alcohol and drugs. I recommend the ISTOK Center to anyone facing addiction and wanting to change their life for the better by making the right choice. Thank you again for your hard and necessary work and for instilling faith in people.
