Of all forms of gambling, slots are the fastest route into addiction. There is no strategy and no pause: the result appears within seconds, and it is that speed which does most of the work.

Why slots take hold faster than other games

In cards or sports betting, time passes between the decision and the result: you have to think, wait for the match, work out the numbers. A slot has none of that — you press the button and within seconds you know everything. In a single evening a person goes through hundreds of these cycles, and each one fixes the habit more firmly than one match a week ever could.

The second reason is the illusion of a near win. The reels stop in a way that makes almost every result look as though it just fell short. The brain reads that not as a loss but as an almost-win, and that is why the hand reaches for the next spin.

The third is that the money stops feeling real. A stake does not look like cash, it looks like a figure on a screen, and topping up from a card takes three taps. Reality only comes back in the morning, when the person opens their banking app.

The signs by which a family sees the problem

The person plays through the night and never gets enough sleep. Small loans appear, along with transfers between their own cards that cannot be explained. Cash and belongings go missing from the house. Every conversation about money ends either in irritation or in a promise that this was the last time.

Another sign is that interests fall away. The person stops going anywhere without access to a phone and the internet. A holiday, visiting friends, a stay in hospital — all of it turns into an inconvenience, because it gets in the way of playing.

How we treat it

The first stage is breaking off access to the game itself: in a residential setting there simply is none, and that alone gives the person several weeks without a spin, which they have not had in years. That is not treatment, though, only the condition that makes it possible.

The main work is cognitive and behavioural therapy. We go through the moment at which a relapse starts, train the person to recognise it in advance, and replace the usual reaction with a different one. Alongside that runs the work with feelings: slots are usually standing in for a way of handling anxiety, and if nothing takes their place, going back to them is only a matter of time.

We work with the family separately: how to stop policing every hryvnia, and equally how to stop quietly clearing the debts. The first does not work; the second feeds the illness.
