Gambling debts and loans: what the family can do

Almost every family goes through the same sequence: they learn about a debt, they clear it, they take a promise in return, and six months later the debt is twice the size. This is not bad luck or coincidence — it is a pattern, and it is worth knowing about in advance.

Why a debt that has been cleared makes things worse

To the family, paying the debt off looks like help. To the illness it looks quite different: a run of gambling that should have ended in disaster ended in nothing at all. The consequence has been taken away, the lesson never happened, and the internal limit has moved — it is now known that even a sum this size gets covered.

This is what co-dependency is: the family sincerely rescues the person and, each time, pushes back the moment when they meet reality. The hardest part to accept is that love and care end up working for the illness rather than against it.

Where the limit of help lies

The line runs between the person and the illness. Helping the person means treatment, a roof, food, taking part in the programme, support for staying in recovery. Helping the illness means covering the consequences of gambling: debts, missed payments, ruined relations with creditors.

In practice this means: money for rehabilitation, yes; money to clear it one last time and start with a clean slate, no. The second has already been tried, which is why you are reading this page.

There is one more rule that saves families from the worst of it: do not take out loans in your own name and do not let documents be signed on your behalf. The hardest cases we have seen began exactly there — when a gambling debt became the debt of the person's mother or wife.

Where to start

First, establish the real figure. Not the one the person named, but all of it: banks, payday loans, friends, pawnshops. Denial is at work here too, and the number said out loud is almost always smaller than the truth.

Second, do not settle the financial question before the medical one. While the person is still gambling, any restructuring of the debt will end in a new bet. The programme comes first, the money afterwards.

Third, call us and describe the situation. We do not deal with debts and we do not give financial advice, but we speak every day with families in exactly this position, and we will tell you where to start in your case.

I, Andrey, am now a former drug addict. My entire family struggled with this disease for a long time, but it kept coming back, and I started using again. I completed a rehabilitation course at the ISTOK Center. The center offered classes on specialized rehabilitation methods for addicts. The management and staff were positive and responsive, and everything contributed to my treatment and recovery. The center has a home-like atmosphere. Everything is thought out and calculated so that the addict can truly reflect on their problem and make the right choice, quitting alcohol and drugs. I recommend the ISTOK Center to anyone facing addiction and wanting to change their life for the better by making the right choice. Thank you again for your hard and necessary work and for instilling faith in people.

My name is Sergey, I live in Kharkiv, and I'm 39 years old. Alcohol abuse has been a long-standing problem for me. Recently, I've also become addicted to drugs. I couldn't quit on my own, not the first time, not even the hundredth time. Unfortunately, changing my life for the better was beyond my power. Based on reviews and advice from a friend who had already gone through a similar journey, I learned about the Istok rehabilitation center. The Istok rehabilitation center has restored me to a normal, active, social, and positive life! It has excellent conditions, knowledgeable staff, and the most professional and qualified addiction specialists and psychologists. Here I learned that alcohol addiction is a terrible disease, but by following certain rules, you can live a full life and never return to this addiction. With the help of this center, I returned to my family and work. Thank you so much for my life!
