Causes and symptoms of gambling addiction: how to recognise the three stages

Gambling addiction develops quietly. The person carries on looking perfectly ordinary, going to work and answering the phone. Families usually find out about it from the debts rather than from the behaviour. The signs below show up much earlier.

What usually lies at the root of it

The causes differ from person to person, but a few come up again and again: a mind that is still unformed or unsettled in the teenage years; a long-running dissatisfaction with one's personal life; too few vivid moments and too little excitement, so that ordinary days feel empty.

Gambling fills that emptiness quickly and without effort, and that is exactly why it takes the place of everything else.

The stages: how the illness moves

Like any addiction, gambling addiction passes through three stages, one after the other.

Stage one. The urge to play grows, but from the outside it is barely visible. The person can still turn a game down, even when the chance is there. Nothing feels wrong yet, so the sessions quietly become more frequent, the stakes rise and the playing goes on longer.

Stage two. Saying no to yourself gets harder, and the choice between playing and not playing tips towards playing more and more often. The person starts to believe in their own luck and in a win that is bound to come. Money that is won goes straight back in, on new and higher stakes. At this point gambling addiction is still relatively easy to treat, yet this is exactly where denial is strongest: people rarely ask for help.

Stage three. The craving becomes irresistible and everything else slips into the background. The person can no longer judge how long a session has lasted; in the short breaks they are working out their strategy and the size of the next stake. Debts grow, because stopping and looking at the situation clearly is already beyond them: as they see it, the money can always be won back by raising the stake. At this stage nobody gets through it without professional help.

Signs in behaviour that are visible from the outside

• Constant talk about the addiction itself: the game comes up whether there is a reason or not, and there is always a search for a new one that will grip them harder.
• Refusal to stop playing, a distorted sense of how much time has gone by, hostility and aggression towards anyone who asks them to finish; apathy away from the game and a visible lift as soon as they go back to it.
• Loss of interest in food and in other basic physical needs.
• An inability to finish by an agreed time, or even to say when the session will end.
• Less and less time given to sleep and rest.
• Neglect of personal hygiene and of contact with friends and family, and withdrawal from ordinary life.
• Loss of interest in hobbies that used to give pleasure.
