Addiction to online casinos

Gambling used to mean going somewhere. Now the casino sits in a pocket, open at three in the morning and asking nobody to leave the room — which is why it can stay hidden for months.

Why an online casino is more dangerous than a gambling hall

A gambling hall had natural limits: the journey there, opening hours, the cash in your pocket, other people around. Each of them created a pause in which a person could stop. Online, not one of those limits is left: the game is open around the clock, a stake goes straight from a bank card, and nobody sees how many hours it has been going on.

The second thing is bonuses and free spins. They are built to bring back anyone who has already decided to stop: the message about a gift arrives precisely when the person has not logged in for a few days.

The third is anonymity. In a hall the person was recognised, and that fact alone held them back. On a phone they are alone with the game, and the only person who can stop them is themselves — and that is exactly the capacity an addiction takes away.

The signs that are visible from the outside

The phone is always face down, the passcode gets changed, apps are hidden away in folders. Normal sleep disappears: the person is up until morning, then catches up during the day. Odd transactions show up in the bank account — small top-ups, dozens of them in a day.

Then come the loans: payday lenders first, then money from friends, then the family savings disappear. The explanations are always plausible and always different. This is usually the stage at which the family learns the full amount.

How treatment works

A residential programme counts for more here than in other forms of gambling addiction, precisely because the game is so available: while the phone is within reach, no agreement holds for longer than a few days. A few weeks without access give the person a first chance to look at the situation clearly.

After that comes the standard programme: cognitive and behavioural therapy, work with feelings, groups, and involvement from people who have been through the centre before. Towards the end we build a separate plan for going home: what to do about the phone, the bank cards and the free evenings, because those are exactly what pull a person back into the game.

With the family we go through the practical side — blocking software, separate accounts, control over access to money. None of this is treatment, but it removes the easiest routes to a relapse in the first months.

I, Andrey, am now a former drug addict. My entire family struggled with this disease for a long time, but it kept coming back, and I started using again. I completed a rehabilitation course at the ISTOK Center. The center offered classes on specialized rehabilitation methods for addicts. The management and staff were positive and responsive, and everything contributed to my treatment and recovery. The center has a home-like atmosphere. Everything is thought out and calculated so that the addict can truly reflect on their problem and make the right choice, quitting alcohol and drugs. I recommend the ISTOK Center to anyone facing addiction and wanting to change their life for the better by making the right choice. Thank you again for your hard and necessary work and for instilling faith in people.

My name is Sergey, I live in Kharkiv, and I'm 39 years old. Alcohol abuse has been a long-standing problem for me. Recently, I've also become addicted to drugs. I couldn't quit on my own, not the first time, not even the hundredth time. Unfortunately, changing my life for the better was beyond my power. Based on reviews and advice from a friend who had already gone through a similar journey, I learned about the Istok rehabilitation center. The Istok rehabilitation center has restored me to a normal, active, social, and positive life! It has excellent conditions, knowledgeable staff, and the most professional and qualified addiction specialists and psychologists. Here I learned that alcohol addiction is a terrible disease, but by following certain rules, you can live a full life and never return to this addiction. With the help of this center, I returned to my family and work. Thank you so much for my life!
