Treatment for alcohol addiction

Alcohol addiction damages relationships long before it damages health: trust inside the family goes first, then work, and only then come the diagnoses. We work with both sides — with the person who drinks and with the people around them.

Alcohol addiction develops regardless of status, income or whether a person has a family. The most vulnerable are people who are psychologically unstable and have little willpower to fall back on; with them the work has to follow its own, broader approach.

Many people become dependent through a yielding character, a life with little structure to it, and people close at hand who keep providing the occasion. The outcome is well known: toxic damage to the internal organs, followed by mental illness in the form of delirium tremens, psychosis or depression.

The causes we see most often

Alcohol addiction in women is even harder to treat than in men, so the work is always tailored to the person. The underlying causes, however, repeat themselves in every case:

Pages in this section

Coming out of a drinking binge

Why bringing someone out of a drinking binge is not treatment, why stopping abruptly at home is dangerous, and how to break the once-a-month drip cycle.

Beer addiction

Beer addiction is the last kind of drinking to be recognised. How to tell a habit from a dependency, and when a residential programme is needed.

The stages of alcohol addiction

The four stages of chronic alcohol addiction we work with, from the first intrusive urge to drink to delirium tremens, and what to do at each one.

How it all works

Stage one

The person is still fully functional: working or studying, with hobbies and a family. But an intrusive urge to drink is already there.

Stage two

Life starts to fall apart: trouble at work, arguments at home. Drinking begins to feel more appealing than time with the family.

Stage three

Getting along with colleagues becomes impossible; the will to work disappears, and so does any interest in the family.

Stage four

Delirium tremens, the point at which nothing is left except the urge to drink.

Frequently asked questions

Can coding (an implant or a suggestion that blocks drinking) be used instead of rehabilitation?

Coding takes away the ability to drink, but it does not touch the reason the person was drinking. If the thinking and the way of life stay the same, everything comes back once the term runs out. We work with the cause itself — and that is exactly why it takes longer.

Someone drinks only beer, and only in the evening. Is that an addiction?

What matters is not the drink or the amount, but the ability to stop. If an evening without alcohol brings irritation, and every attempt at a break ends in going back, the strength of the drink is not the issue.

Can a person learn to drink moderately after treatment?

No, and we say so plainly. Once the capacity to drink in a controlled way is lost, even after years of abstinence a small amount quickly takes a person back to their previous volumes. The goal is sobriety, not moderation.

How long does the programme last?

The length depends on the stage, on how long the drinking has gone on and on the state of the person's health. We give an exact answer after an assessment, rather than blind over the phone.

I, Andrey, am now a former drug addict. My entire family struggled with this disease for a long time, but it kept coming back, and I started using again. I completed a rehabilitation course at the ISTOK Center. The center offered classes on specialized rehabilitation methods for addicts. The management and staff were positive and responsive, and everything contributed to my treatment and recovery. The center has a home-like atmosphere. Everything is thought out and calculated so that the addict can truly reflect on their problem and make the right choice, quitting alcohol and drugs. I recommend the ISTOK Center to anyone facing addiction and wanting to change their life for the better by making the right choice. Thank you again for your hard and necessary work and for instilling faith in people.
