Treatment for drug addiction

Drug addiction affects the mind as much as the body. On drugs a person builds their own reality, one in which everything suits them — which is why pleading from the family almost never works, and why the time it takes is working against the family.

Very often it is not the person with the addiction who comes to us, but their relatives — worn out by years of asking, threatening and trying to keep control. And by then time has almost always been lost: time in which trained specialists could have changed everything.

Drugs are not hard to get hold of today, and teenagers often try them for the new sensation, treating it as a one-off. But drug addiction is almost impossible to keep in check: a person can become seriously dependent the very first time.

How to help a person with an addiction take the first step

Someone with a drug addiction will deny the problem to the last and believe they can stop whenever they choose. That is why they cannot simply be forced into a residential programme, and why treatment becomes more difficult. If this is your situation, here is what to do, in order:

Opioid addiction

Opioid addiction: why withdrawal is the illness's strongest argument, how detox works and what comes next. Residential programme in the Kyiv region.

Stimulant addiction

Amphetamine, methamphetamine, mephedrone, cocaine: why families miss the problem for so long, and why the mind suffers long before the body does.

Cannabis addiction

Cannabis: why “it is not really a drug” is the most common form denial takes, and when teenage use stops being an episode and becomes an illness.

Addiction to prescription medicines

Addiction to medicines a doctor prescribed: tranquillisers, sleeping pills, codeine and tramadol. Why a prescription does not protect you from the illness.

How it all works

Assessment

We gather information about the person, their state of health and any co-occurring conditions. Tests are only done with the person's consent, and they matter for everything that follows.

Detox

Clearing toxic substances from the body and preparing for medical treatment. Physical health recovers, and it becomes possible to move on to the main stage.

Individual treatment

Once withdrawal has passed, the body has recovered and the person can think clearly again, an individually chosen course begins: psychotherapy, moral support and social adaptation.

The family

At the same time we teach relatives how to behave so that they do not, without meaning to, push the person back into using. Without this stage the result falls apart at home within a few weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Can drug addiction be treated at home?

Easing the physical state at home is sometimes possible; stopping the illness almost never is. At home everything stays as it was: the same surroundings, the same contacts and the same thinking that brought the person back to using every time.

From what age do you take people?

Age is decided case by case over the phone: a teenager and someone with twenty years of use need different programmes and different timescales.

Is a certificate from an addiction specialist needed?

Not for a consultation. For the programme itself, which examinations are needed is decided after the assessment, and some of them can be done at the centre.

What if there is HIV or hepatitis?

That is not a reason for us to turn anyone away. It is common among people with a drug addiction and needs separate attention during treatment — which is exactly why assessment comes first.

I, Andrey, am now a former drug addict. My entire family struggled with this disease for a long time, but it kept coming back, and I started using again. I completed a rehabilitation course at the ISTOK Center. The center offered classes on specialized rehabilitation methods for addicts. The management and staff were positive and responsive, and everything contributed to my treatment and recovery. The center has a home-like atmosphere. Everything is thought out and calculated so that the addict can truly reflect on their problem and make the right choice, quitting alcohol and drugs. I recommend the ISTOK Center to anyone facing addiction and wanting to change their life for the better by making the right choice. Thank you again for your hard and necessary work and for instilling faith in people.

My name is Sergey, I live in Kharkiv, and I'm 39 years old. Alcohol abuse has been a long-standing problem for me. Recently, I've also become addicted to drugs. I couldn't quit on my own, not the first time, not even the hundredth time. Unfortunately, changing my life for the better was beyond my power. Based on reviews and advice from a friend who had already gone through a similar journey, I learned about the Istok rehabilitation center. The Istok rehabilitation center has restored me to a normal, active, social, and positive life! It has excellent conditions, knowledgeable staff, and the most professional and qualified addiction specialists and psychologists. Here I learned that alcohol addiction is a terrible disease, but by following certain rules, you can live a full life and never return to this addiction. With the help of this center, I returned to my family and work. Thank you so much for my life!
