Success and addiction: why the illness does not ask about your status

18 September 2026

One stereotype is hard to shift: that an addicted person is someone who has lost everything and hit rock bottom. Because of it, families spend years failing to see the illness in a man with a car, a job and a suit.

The truth is that substance addiction does not choose its victims by status. Entrepreneurs, doctors, police officers, soldiers and homemakers all get caught. Often you cannot tell from a sober person whether they use or not.

During a relapse they hide away in their quiet flats and go out only for the next supply — dark glasses on, "unnoticed". In reality everyone sees it: family, neighbours, shop staff, dealers.

If treatment does not begin in time, the rock bottom everyone is warned about becomes a real prospect for someone who used to be successful. Not straight away, but that is the direction of travel.

What they say themselves at a consultation

One of the most common answers is plain exhaustion from the responsibilities they have taken on, and a wish to escape from reality. The second is the opposite: everything was going so well that the person came to believe they were above the illness and could do as they pleased — forgetting they were ill, and deciding they could now use in a controlled way.

The outcome is the same in both cases: after every fall, recovery is harder, more is lost, and sometimes what has gone cannot be brought back at all.

What the programme does about this

Sober living rests on admitting one's own powerlessness in the face of the illness. That is not humiliation; it is the point at which a person stops considering themselves all-powerful and starts doing the work.

The twelve-step programme and the centre's staff teach honesty with oneself and the right to make mistakes — one's own and other people's. People with an addiction are usually perfectionists who have reached the highest level in the art of destroying themselves. The job of the staff is to show them their strengths and their weak points, and to teach them to put that energy into something useful rather than into chasing a substance.

Successful people in particular have to learn the most ordinary things: how to rest, how to name what they feel, how to admit they are tired. For a person with an addiction, balance is not a nice extra but a condition of staying sober afterwards.

The understanding that rest is as necessary as air comes with experience — and with pushing back against the idea that you can only unwind properly with a substance. After that comes a quiet pleasure in simple things: a long drive, a walk in the woods, music, sunshine. And in knowing that the sobriety is welcome not only to them, but to everyone around them.

Frequently asked questions

He works and provides for the family. Surely that is not addiction?

Still being able to work disproves nothing. What matters is control: can the person stop for a long stretch, and do they return to the substance after tiredness, a row or something worth celebrating?

Will the centre admit someone in a senior position anonymously?

Yes, treatment is anonymous. It is a standard condition, and we say so in the very first conversation on the phone.

I, Andrey, am now a former drug addict. My entire family struggled with this disease for a long time, but it kept coming back, and I started using again. I completed a rehabilitation course at the ISTOK Center. The center offered classes on specialized rehabilitation methods for addicts. The management and staff were positive and responsive, and everything contributed to my treatment and recovery. The center has a home-like atmosphere. Everything is thought out and calculated so that the addict can truly reflect on their problem and make the right choice, quitting alcohol and drugs. I recommend the ISTOK Center to anyone facing addiction and wanting to change their life for the better by making the right choice. Thank you again for your hard and necessary work and for instilling faith in people.

My name is Sergey, I live in Kharkiv, and I'm 39 years old. Alcohol abuse has been a long-standing problem for me. Recently, I've also become addicted to drugs. I couldn't quit on my own, not the first time, not even the hundredth time. Unfortunately, changing my life for the better was beyond my power. Based on reviews and advice from a friend who had already gone through a similar journey, I learned about the Istok rehabilitation center. The Istok rehabilitation center has restored me to a normal, active, social, and positive life! It has excellent conditions, knowledgeable staff, and the most professional and qualified addiction specialists and psychologists. The consultation is free and anonymous. It is usually the family who call first rather than the person with the addiction — that is normal, and most recovery stories begin exactly there.
