Coming out of a drinking binge

A drinking binge is not the worst point of the illness — it is simply the one point at which the family finally acts. The only question is how it ends: with another drip, or with a way out of the cycle.

Bringing someone out of a binge is not treatment

This is the most important thing to understand at the outset. A drip relieves the physical state and gets the person back on their feet — and that is all it does. The illness, the thinking and the reason the binge began are left untouched, so the next episode is only a matter of time.

That is how the cycle forms, and families live inside it for years: a binge, a doctor called out to the house, a few calm weeks, a relapse. Every turn of the cycle costs money and health, and every turn erodes the family's belief that anything can be changed at all.

Why you should not stop abruptly on your own

A long binge followed by abrupt, unsupervised withdrawal can produce a severe reaction, up to delirium tremens, which is the fourth stage of the illness. In that state a person is a danger both to themselves and to those around them, and it can no longer be dealt with by home remedies.

So the order is this: first the person is stabilised under supervision, then — and only then — the conversation about a programme. The reverse order does not work: in the middle of a binge a person is physically incapable of making a decision about treatment.

What we offer instead of another turn of the cycle

Once the acute state has passed, the person reaches a moment when, for the first time in a long while, they can actually listen. It is a narrow window, and what happens next is decided inside it. We advise families to arrange a place at the centre in advance, before that window opens — otherwise it closes while they are still looking for options.

After that comes the usual route: assessment, detox, the main programme built around elements of the twelve steps, work with the family and aftercare once the person is discharged. It takes longer than a drip, but it is the only thing that stops the cycle.

I, Andrey, am now a former drug addict. My entire family struggled with this disease for a long time, but it kept coming back, and I started using again. I completed a rehabilitation course at the ISTOK Center. The center offered classes on specialized rehabilitation methods for addicts. The management and staff were positive and responsive, and everything contributed to my treatment and recovery. The center has a home-like atmosphere. Everything is thought out and calculated so that the addict can truly reflect on their problem and make the right choice, quitting alcohol and drugs. I recommend the ISTOK Center to anyone facing addiction and wanting to change their life for the better by making the right choice. Thank you again for your hard and necessary work and for instilling faith in people.

My name is Sergey, I live in Kharkiv, and I'm 39 years old. Alcohol abuse has been a long-standing problem for me. Recently, I've also become addicted to drugs. I couldn't quit on my own, not the first time, not even the hundredth time. Unfortunately, changing my life for the better was beyond my power. Based on reviews and advice from a friend who had already gone through a similar journey, I learned about the Istok rehabilitation center. The Istok rehabilitation center has restored me to a normal, active, social, and positive life! It has excellent conditions, knowledgeable staff, and the most professional and qualified addiction specialists and psychologists. Here I learned that alcohol addiction is a terrible disease, but by following certain rules, you can live a full life and never return to this addiction. With the help of this center, I returned to my family and work. Thank you so much for my life!
