How to choose a rehabilitation centre

Families choose a centre in the worst state they will ever be in — in a hurry, at night, after yet another relapse. That is why advertising with big promises works, promises nobody would believe with a clear head. Here are the questions worth putting to everyone, ourselves included.

What to ask

Who exactly will be working with the person. Names, not “a team of professionals”. You have a right to know who you will be speaking to tomorrow.

What the programme consists of, day by day. Therapy groups, individual work, the routine — specifics, not “a comprehensive approach”.

How the first two weeks are organised. This is the hardest period, and a centre that will not describe it is most likely just waiting for it to pass.

What happens if the person wants to leave. The answer “we will not let them go” is unlawful and dangerous. The answer “we will let them go, but we will talk first” is a normal one.

How contact with the family works: when there will be calls, when there will be visits, who will tell you how the person is doing and when.

Whether they work with the family separately. If they do not, you will be left alone with the same set of habits that brought you to make the call.

What happens after discharge. The illness is chronic, and a centre that offers nothing once the programme ends hands the person straight back into the same surroundings.

What it costs and what exactly that covers. It is an awkward question, but it belongs in the first conversation, not a month later.

Answers that are a good reason to put the phone down

“We guarantee a complete cure” and “a guaranteed result”. Nobody can guarantee another person's choices for the rest of their life, and a centre that promises this is telling you something untrue on the very first call.

“We will bring them in by force, just give us the address.” Holding a person against their will is not treatment, it is a criminal offence. Motivating someone is possible and necessary; delivering them tied up is not.

“We will cure them in 21 days, for good.” The length depends on the stage and on how long the addiction has run, and an honest answer sounds like “we will tell you after we have talked”, not like a special offer.

“Do not think about anything, just make the transfer.” A centre that dodges specific questions about the programme and the staff is selling you a week of calm, not recovery.

How we answer these questions

Our programme is a professional course of psychotherapy built around elements of the twelve steps, with therapy groups every day and separate work with the family, in person and remotely. The centre is Christian and treats any faith with respect.

The length is different for everyone, and we will only give you one after we have talked. We do not give guarantees of “for ever” — those come only from people who have no intention of standing behind their words.

People stay at the centre voluntarily. If someone refuses, a motivational psychologist works with them, travelling to them if needed — but never by force.

I, Andrey, am now a former drug addict. My entire family struggled with this disease for a long time, but it kept coming back, and I started using again. I completed a rehabilitation course at the ISTOK Center. The center offered classes on specialized rehabilitation methods for addicts. The management and staff were positive and responsive, and everything contributed to my treatment and recovery. The center has a home-like atmosphere. Everything is thought out and calculated so that the addict can truly reflect on their problem and make the right choice, quitting alcohol and drugs. I recommend the ISTOK Center to anyone facing addiction and wanting to change their life for the better by making the right choice. Thank you again for your hard and necessary work and for instilling faith in people.

My name is Sergey, I live in Kharkiv, and I'm 39 years old. Alcohol abuse has been a long-standing problem for me. Recently, I've also become addicted to drugs. I couldn't quit on my own, not the first time, not even the hundredth time. Unfortunately, changing my life for the better was beyond my power. Based on reviews and advice from a friend who had already gone through a similar journey, I learned about the Istok rehabilitation center. The Istok rehabilitation center has restored me to a normal, active, social, and positive life! It has excellent conditions, knowledgeable staff, and the most professional and qualified addiction specialists and psychologists. Here I learned that alcohol addiction is a terrible disease, but by following certain rules, you can live a full life and never return to this addiction. With the help of this center, I returned to my family and work. Thank you so much for my life!

Hello. I'm Marina, 28 years old, and I live in Kyiv. I've had problems with drug use for a long time. I tried to quit, but all my attempts were unsuccessful. Finally, I decided to seek help, and I received genuine, professional, high-quality help, with care and support at the Istok Rehabilitation Center. This center is a godsend for alcohol and drug addicts. Excellent living conditions, qualified staff, and psychologists specializing in addiction. I was told that addiction is incurable, but it's possible to live happily with it; you just need to adopt new principles. Thanks to this center, I overcame all my problems. This is the center you should trust...
